Trust in policing has taken a hit:poll

A survey released today by the polling firm Leger shows there has been a significant drop in the public’s trust in police over the last month. The survey polled public opinion in both Canada and the United States. It showed a drop in public confidence in both countries but the drop was more pronounced in the US than Canada.

Key Findings:

70% of Canadians trust police services (an 11% drop from Leger’s May 4, 2020 results).

63% of Canadians and 58% of Americans are satisfied with the efforts made by their provincial/state government to improve relations with visible minorities.

90% of Canadians think police officers wearing a body camera is a rather good measure.

This web survey was conducted from June 12 to June 14, 2020, with 1,527 Canadians and 1,004 Americans, 18 years of age or older, randomly recruited from LEO’s online panel.

For comparison, a probability sample of 1,527 respondents would have a margin of error of ±2.51%, 19 times out of 20, while a probability sample of 1,004 would have a margin of error of +3.1%, 19 times out of 20.
