In addition to counting the number of COVID cases epidemiologists pay attention to what they call the Rt (Virus reproduction) value. The number is a measure of how many people are being infected by a single person with the virus. Because Ontario has experience six days of 400-plus new cases our reproduction number has risen above 1,0. The current reproduction number in Ontario is 1.05 which means 20 infected persons would infect 21 people. Public health officials use the figure to determine when to reduce social distancing measures or to reimpose them.
