Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini will take over as Director of Education for the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board. She was previously with Toronto District School Board (TDSB) where she served as an Executive Superintendent of Education.
In a release, Hamilton District School Board says, “Sheryl began her career in education more than 30 years ago in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She speaks English, French, and Spanish and has extensive experience working in diverse communities. With teaching experience that spans Kindergarten to Grade 12, Sheryl is a strong advocate for public education and has a deep commitment to Indigenous rights, equity, and inclusion. Sheryl is committed to elevating student voices, particularly those students from marginalized or under-served groups”
Ms. Robinson Petrazzini is described as a dynamic leader who prioritizes building relationships and educators’ capacity,
She steps into a job where the board has been accused of harboring racist attitudes among trustees themselves. Allegations of racism were levelled by a former student trustee which led to a third-party investigation, which partially collaborated some of them. Critics of the report say it appeared to target some trustees who voted against ending a police liaison program that had been operating at HWDSB for decades.
Three former student trustees are now seeking seats on the Board in the upcoming municipal election.
