Mohawk to inaugurate program for game designers

Mohawk College is launching a new Game Design program to train students for careers in the fast-growing game design industry, with a unique focus on breaking down barriers and creating gaming content that better reflects today’s more diverse and inclusive society.

The three-year Game–Design Advanced Diploma program has been established in response to the expanding game design industry in the Greater Hamilton Area. While the college’s new program will provide students with the design, technical and artistic skills used in game production, it also includes an Ethics course that explores both the content of games and workplace dynamics.

“This program creates a talent pipeline that will feed directly into the growing digital media and game design industry in Ontario, Hamilton and the surrounding region,” said Sylvia Lowndes, Dean of McKeil School of Business | School of Creative Industries, Liberal Studies & Communication. “Digital media is one of Hamilton’s fastest-growing tech sectors and this program will train Future Ready graduates who can find promising new careers in this exciting industry.”

The leadership team that developed the Game–Design Advanced Diploma program is largely composed of female academics, respected in their fields. This underscores the prominent role women can play within the industry and the unique focus on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) that has been woven into all aspects of the program.

“This program will offer students a healthy understanding of how the content they create can impact users and will reinforce the importance of supporting a positive and collaborative work environment,” said Dr. Angela Stukator, the special advisor who is co-leading the development of the program along with Associate Dean Dr. Lisa Funnell. “This program is intended to model rather than mirror the gaming industry.”

The Game – Design Advanced Diploma program at Mohawk College will accept its first class of students in September 2023, with registration opening in October 2022. More information about the new program can be found at: mohawkcollege.ca/Game-Design
