Hamilton firefighters were called to extinguish a blaze that broke out at approximately 12:15 this morning on Highbury Drive, between Holyoake Drive and Gatestone Drive in Stoney Creek
On arrival, crews reported a well involved and advancing fire in a two storey unit in a row of townhomes. Because of the potential of fire spread to adjoining units, the alarm was immediately upgraded and additional resource were dispatched from across the City to the scene. Crews initiating aggressive interior firefighting operations reported heavy fire and extreme heat throughout the first floor of the unit with fire extending into the second fire. The firefighters were able to contain the fire to unit 15 and bring the fire under control in approximately 25 minutes. The fire consumed the main floor of unit 15 as well as caused significant damage to the second floor, including structural damage to the floor. While the fire was stopped before it extended into the adjacent units 14 and 16, both units some damage to the exterior of the units at the rear as well as some smoke damage. It is estimated that the total damage amount will be in excess of $1 million dollars. At this time no injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is undetermined. The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified.
