In the wake of the murder of OPP officer Gregorz Pierzchala by a man on bail for other violent crimes, there are growing calls for bail reform. In the latest instance Peel Police have arrested a 22-year-old man with history of violence for attempted murder following a December shooting in Mississauga. The man was on bail from previous attempted murder charges.
The shooting took place December 14, 2022, when police responded to reports of shots fired in the area of Tenth Line West and Derry Road in Mississauga. On arrival, police learned that an altercation took place between several individuals, which escalated when someone was assaulted, and multiple shots were fired. Fortunately, no one was struck by gunfire; however, one victim suffered minor injuries as a result of the altercation.
Detectives identified the shooter as Elijah Simpson-Sweeney. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and with the assistance of the North Bay Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police, he was arrested on Wednesday, January 4, 2023.
At the time of his arrest, Elijah Simpson-Sweeney was on a release order for a separate attempted murder and firearms offences. In addition, Elijah Simpson-Sweeney was also wanted by the Toronto Police Service for Second Degree Murder and Attempt Murder. He is also wanted by another Ontario Police Service for the offence of Flight From Police.

He was held for a bail hearing and attended the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.
