Man Charged in shooting death of teenaged girl

Hamilton Police have charged a man with manslaughter in the death of a 17-year-old teen after she was shot at a residence on St. Matthews Avenue in Hamilton.

Shortly after 4:00 a.m., Hamilton Police responded to a 911 call on St. Matthews Avenue. Upon arriving, police located a 17-year-old female with a gunshot wound. She was transported to hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Detectives have been working throughout the night on the investigation and have been able to identify a suspect in the death of Myah Larmond. The suspect was located near the scene by uniform patrol and arrested at 2:35 a.m. this morning. The 21-year-old male will be charged with manslaughter and appear at the John Sopinka Courthouse via video later today.

At this time, the evidence supports an element of carelessness and recklessness by the accused. There is currently no evidence to suggest the victim was the intended target.

Hamilton Police have obtained warrants for the residence. Police will be spending most of today and possibly tomorrow at the crime scene collecting evidence. The firearm still remains outstanding. Residents are encouraged to thoroughly search their property in case the weapon has been tossed or concealed.

Detectives continue to urge anyone who was present in the house at the time of the shooting to contact police. Now that charges are before the court, police will not discuss specific evidence related to the case.

If you have any information that you believe could assist Police with the investigation into this crime, you are asked to contact Detective Geoffrey Burbidge at 905-546-2288.
