Halton Children’s Water Festival back as an in-person event

This year, the Halton Children’s Water Festival is returning to Kelso Conservation Area for September 27-29 after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19.

The Halton Children’s Water Festival is a curriculum-linked environmental education program, hosted by Conservation Halton and Halton Region, in partnership with the Halton District School Board, Halton Catholic District School Board, City of Burlington, Town of Halton Hills, and Town of Oakville.

The festival program teaches students in grade five about the importance of protecting water, with activities to learn about water flow, pollution, species, health, safety and more. When the festival is over, the children are ready to act as environmental stewards in their community, and teachers have contributed to the “Air and Water” component of the science curriculum in a way that students will remember.

Due to COVID-19, the Halton Children’s Water Festival was unable to be hosted in 2020, but throughout 2021 organizers focused their efforts on developing a virtual program. The virtual program launched in April 2022 and had more than 1,600 students from 200 classes signed up for about 80 virtual field trips.

This year, the virtual option is still being offered, but the Halton Children’s Water Festival will return for grade five students only, with 675 students registered to participate at Kelso Conservation Area.

Said Andrew Farr, Commissioner of Public Works. “As part of our commitment to deliver high-quality, safe drinking water to the residents and businesses of Halton Region, we need to protect and conserve Halton’s valuable water resources. We are pleased to provide an opportunity for students to learn these valuable skills outside of the classroom.”

Since it started in 2006, the Halton Children’s Water Festival has educated more than 48,000 elementary students and engaged more than 6,000 high school students as volunteers.

The Halton Children’s Water Festival is able to educate and engage so many students because of strong community support from partners and sponsors. If you organization would like to sponsor the Halton Children’s Water Festival, you can find more information at hcwf.ca.
