23 homes under construction were destroyed in a blaze that ripped through a subdivision on the South Mountain Monday.
When firefighters arrived at the location near Rymal Road and the Red Hill Valley extension the blaze was already fully involved.
Damage estimates are in the range of $10 million.
Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe said That in addition to the 23 partially constructed homes destroyed, another 12 occupied houses “adjacent to the fire” have been damaged. But “for the most part, it’s been windows shattered from the heat.”
The blaze also destroyed or damaged a number of vehicles and pieces of construction equipment that were nearby.
There were no reports of injuries. The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office and Hamilton Police are investigating.
