There is a lot of community excitement in Grimsby with the beginning of construction finally taking place. In the latest development, a construction crane has been erected in preparation for the $224 million complete re-build of the facility that has served the community for more than 70 years. Originally built with money raised in the community, over the past decades WLMH has had some near-death experiences. In the Mike Harris era, there was talk of turning the hospital into a chronic care centre. In the 90’s a proposal to shut down the Emergency Department at WLMH resulted in a rally attended by 6,000 supporters. Things changed when West Lincoln joined Hamilton Health Sciences. That move, coupled with the population explosion in East Stoney Creek, Winona and Grimsby, helped secure the hospitals future. In 2018 the Ontario government announced it would fund the massive construction project now underway.

To continue to keep the community up-to-date thanks to a new webcam livestream, anyone can watch the building of the new West Lincoln Memorial Hospital from the comfort of their home, office or mobile.

The hospital has also covered the normally drab construction hoarding with murals showing the finished building and providing other information about the hospital.
