President Donald Trump has commuted the sentence of his friend Roger Stone who was convicted of lying to Congress and sentenced to 40 months in jail. Commutation removed the sentence but nor the conviction. Commutation differs from a pardon in that acceptance of a pardon carries the connotation of accepting guilt. Even though he will not go to jail, Stone continues to appeal his conviction.
In issuing the commutation the White House issued a lengthy news release. CNN has fact checked the assertions made in the news release and rebuts some of them in this article.
