Burlington may be headed for a mandatory mask order

In recent days there has been a growing public demand by members of the public for mandatory masking inside stores and other establishments. This comes, as the US is experiencing its worst spike ever in COVID cases after states reopened without mandatory masking rules. Locally social media is full of complaints by posters about being in stores where either staff or fellow shoppers are showing up without masks. Now, Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward issued a statement today that makes it likely that city will be ordered to mask up.

In the last few days, we have received confirmation from the Medical Officer of Health of her support for a bylaw, and I have received overwhelming support from the community and a number of businesses for such a bylaw.

I’ve been researching Section 22 mask orders directed by a Medical Officer of Health & municipal/regional bylaws (only Toronto has so far passed one). The language is similar except that Section 22 comes with $5000/day fines for businesses. There are no set fines yet for a bylaw.

Only the Medical Officer of Health can order a Section 22. For reference, the Wellington/Dufferin/Guelph Medical Officer of Health Section 22 order is here: https://t.co/M2lhfvI312?amp=1

The City of Toronto  bylaw provides for exceptions & no one can be required to show proof of how they meet those exceptions. There are no set fines yet. The bylaw is temporary. It is acknowledged a bylaw would be difficult to enforce but can help with voluntary compliance. As TO put it: “Whereas it is believed that the existence of an enforceable temporary by-law requirement will help to educate the public on the importance of a properly worn mask or face covering and encourage voluntary compliance”

  • Thank you Burlington for doing so well with this epidemic your number 1 CONGRATULATIONS…As your reward and thankyou so much for your diligence you must ALL WEAR MASKS NOW IN ANY INDOOR AREA….Again your all doing a great job…NOT

  • yes, there are dingbats in our midst, and the virus has made them increasingly feverish…….and here is a little reminder for Ms. Mayor…….you represent over 180,000 people in your community……..”overwhelming support” is not loud whining from a relatively small collection of know it alls. Tilting at windmills in order to satiate the unstable……fill your boots girl.

    • Exactly! From the poll above only half of them seem to support it. That is not “overwhelming” in my eyes.

    • It is pointless to mandate mask. Not because they don’t help. But because people DO NOT wear them properly. I do not feel safer when I see MANY wearing them hanging from their chin or below their nose. At least when I don’t see a mask, I know to keep my distance.
I am high risk but I also have difficulty breathing. I would be quicker to tell people keep your distance than where’s your mask.

  • They bought masks now they have to wear them. Wearing masks is a total nonsense in particular at those temperatures. Total Marxists cra……p!

  • First of all this is just another useless tactic to fight the flu… what we have done so far is ridiculous based on all the misinformation all the governments have given us. Fear mongering by the media has got people that follow closely so scared they want to enforce mandatory masks??? Good luck enforcing it and further dividing the public. 835 total reported cases for halton region between multiple cities is like 0.0003% of population and we want to try and force people to wear masks??? People need to look up and do their own research and stop watching the news and listening to the media.

  • As of right now Joseph brant is currently caring for 0 confirmed cases of covid 19.
There has been 60% more cases in Oakville and Milton isn’t far behind Oakville .
50% of the cases were from long term care outbreaks.
Burlington considers an outbreak 5 or less people.
These are all real facts on what’s happening but yet there is this imaginary group that makes up the overwhelming population of Burlington that agrees we should wear masks inside? Why not a vote? I have a business and was never asked. This will continue to raise costs for the struggling businesses and force some people to shop else where. Is this what we want?

  • When we agree to anything “mandatory” we are essentially giving up part of our freedom, which is what I suspect part of the agenda behind this plandemic. I’m almost certain most people would also agree to mandatory vaccinations procured by our saviour Bill Gates. Can’t blame them – most sheep want to be shepherded.

  • Where were mandatory orders for masks when thousands of people were protesting, screaming and speaking moistly? Orders dont apply to them? Government’s credibility is out of the window. Government is scared of those criminals, and dont enforce any laws or orders on them. So…who to bully…normal productive people that are working for a living…give that dad with his kid a ticket for a mask and let protesters do what they want. That scamdemic is going to be a part of history in schools one day. Btw..im wheeping for my kid’s future people…. yes make it mandatory to wear a mask, but make sure youre not only bullying normal people about it. GOD BLESS

  • Seems there is something wrong with the survey. When I click on “happy” the number jumps up by 30 points. When I exit and re-enter it is back down 30. So it’s either 152 or 182 votes. Skip the polls BO.

  • Stupidity people dont know how to wear the mask properly and by the way same thing goes for gloves. I agree with longterm care homes hospitals senior citizens home that it should be mandatory to wear a mask however for the rest just keep your social distance.
By the way the government on all levels are creating paranoia in people by all this.

  • Perhaps those who refuse to wear masks in indoor public places would be willing to 100% decline going to our hospital if they contract the disease and feel weak, confused and have difficulty breathing. Or worse. At least the health care providers won’t have to take care of them and will be at less risk themselves.
