Since the election of the current Burlington Council in 2018, staff have been working to change the former “Grow Bold” approach, which was seen as allowing too much intensification in downtown Burlington, with a more modest development policy. The first step was the removal of the designation of downtown Burlington as a transit hub, which had enabled the construction of buildings of a height that concerned members of the community. The province agreed that Downtown Burlington did not quality as a transit node and that allowed a new planning process– The “Taking a Closer Look at the Downtown” (Scoped Re-examination of the Adopted Official Plan) which has now been released. Interested parties have until August 28 to submit comments.
