The number of sexual assaults on women using area trails continues to rise. In the latest incident, Hamilton Police have arrested a 38-year-old Hamilton man after two women reported they were sexually assaulted on a popular trail near McMaster University.
Police say in the early evening Saturday, a stranger came up to two women walking on Chegwin Trail between Cootes Paradise and the university campus.
He spoke with them briefly before sexually assaulting them, police said. One of the women fought him off and contacted police.
McMaster Security Services assisted by citizens made the arrest a short time later.
Michael Smith is charged with two counts of sexual assault.
The sexual assaults and arrest come at a time when women are increasingly confronted and assaulted while using area trails. Hamilton Police have promised to increase presence in and around the trail system.
