It was 75 years ago that the Burlington Public Utilities Commission, Burlington Hydro’s predecessor, was created.* The first meeting took place on July 6, 1945 in the Town of Burlington’s Council Chamber. Today launches the company’s 75th Anniversary celebration, albeit virtual, as we look back on a long and storied history.
“It’s a milestone that marks many decades of service to a growing and vibrant community,” says John Maheu, Burlington Hydro Board Chair. “We’re proud of that history and our ongoing commitment to provide safe and reliable electricity to the businesses, institutions and residents of our great City.”
Serving a population of 4,380 in 1945, to close to 200,000 in 2020, Burlington Hydro has evolved and grown to accommodate the power needs of a vibrant City. From post-war shortages to the boom years of the 50s and 60s, through to innovations that are changing the face of today’s electricity industry, we continue to serve the City of Burlington with pride.
“At the heart of 75 successful years are our employees both past and present. They are the very core of our company – who we are and who we aspire to be as we look forward to many more years of providing power to our customers and the community,” says Gerry Smallegange, President and Chief Executive Officer.
An historical timeline has been created on the Burlington Hydro website, with a celebratory video to mark this special anniversary. Be sure to access our anniversary portal at: www.burlingtonhydro.com.
*Prior the creation of the Burlington PUC in 1945, electricity was distributed into the Burlington community by private power companies (1900 to 1930) and the province’s Hydro Electric Power Commission of Ontario (1930 to 1945).
