Sam Merulla slams NDP

Ward 4 Councillor Sam Merulla issued a strongly-worded tweet announcing that he is “de-funding” both the Hamilton Spectator and the NDP. The councillor who announced he is not intending to run again, has apparently decided to take the gloves off in disagreeing with tone of political discourse in Hamilton over policing and other issues.

Merulla was an influential backroom Liberal before he ran for council, serving as an area Vice President for the party and as a campaign organizer for the late Liberal MPP Domenic Agostino. He fell out with the Liberals over the decision by the party to sole-source the nomination in Hamilton Centre to Ralph Agostino after his brother’s death. Merulla had favoured Ward Three Councillor Bernie Morelli for the job. Merulla moved to the NDP where he stayed for several years. He narrowly lost the Hamilton East Stoney Creek Liberal nomination to Paul Miller in 2007. The first sense of Merulla moving away from the NDP came in 2018, when he was wooed by the Liberals, and again in 2019 when the Federal Liberals expressed an interest in his candidacy.

  • At times I wonder how do these people get elected, in the first place!
Mr Merulla come across as cold hearted on the mandatory mask issue, he gave no consideration for Hamiltonians who cannot afford to purchase masks, like myself. I am not anti masker, just low income.
I feel we need to have a conversation about democracy, what is it?It does not matter which level of government we are talking about, they never survey their constituents on anything.
I’m not a member of a party I have no input, they, meaning each party set their own agenda based on their groupthink.
Putting an X beside a name on a ballot, does not mean you have direct participation in governance.
Mr Merulla represents himself, that’s it. Can we question his rhetoric which comes across as more ego fulfilling then actual criticism ?

  • The” monkey with the shotgun” has developed poor aim as his vision continues to falter.
The man is an embarrassment, both to his family, and the entire community.
