It was a wet start to the weekend at the CANUSA Games in Flint, and some of the games had to be cancelled due to the weather, but the games must go on. Some of the events were moved indoors, such as the 12 & Under baseball games on Friday. The kids from Flint defeated Hamilton 9-6 in that game.

The opening ceremonies were also moved indoors to the Northwestern High School Gymnasium where the athletes were introduced and the ceremonial torch was lit, similar to what is done with the Olympic Games. Excitement had been building among the athletes, who tweeted photos and words of anticipation leading up to the opening ceremonies.

“Cant wait to go to canusa!” posted Hamilton athlete Joey Crouse on his Facebook page. Crouse participated in the football competition at the games. Emily Fougere also posted an excited message on her timeline. “On my way to Canusa! Actually so excited now.”

Several events had to be moved and rescheduled due to the rainy weather. Golf was cancelled entirely early Saturday.

After the first day of the games, the athletes from Flint have the edge of their counterparts from Hamilton. The kids from Flint won the bulk of their matches in Basketball, Ice Hockey, Track & Field and Girl’s Soccer. The Hamilton boys shut out their Flint opponents in their three games played.
