To hear Coun. Chad Collins, you’d think the politicization of the appointment of the Chief of Police was something new. As if. Make no mistake—this isn’t about the distasteful practice of string-pulling to decide who should be Hamilton’s Police Chief–the only real issue here is WHO is pulling the strings. Coun. Lloyd Ferguson showed guts in casting the deciding vote in favour of extending Chief DeCaire’s contract. Word is, he has been warned that he will pay a price—that council will vote to remove him from the police commission. Should that happen it will be a naked act of thuggery and voters should take down the names of those responsible and act accordingly in October. It is time for members of council to follow Ferguson’s example and stand up against the power clique and thereby demonstrate their fitness to continue in office.
