For a hardy band of aqua-fit participants who use the Jimmy Thompson Pool on King Street East the wait is nearly over. The pool has been closed since last spring to allow for the construction of the Bernie Morelli Recreation Centre (BMRC) – a 55,000 SF facility which features several active program spaces; dance/fitness studios with wooden floors and full length mirrors, a 6,300 Sf gymnasium with four badminton and four pickleball courts and one basketball and one volleyball court, a two-lane indoor track (overlooking the gymnasium) , a leisure pool with integrated hydrotherapy area, and community rooms outfitted with A/V equipment and stunning views of the neighbouring Tim Horton’s field.
The BMRC will also connect to the existing Jimmy Thompson Memorial Pool building through a two-storey public lobby space incorporating an elevator and barrier-free accessible restrooms. Additionally, a 13,500 SF Ice/Splash Pad, and reflecting pond connect the indoor activities to the outdoors.
