Hamilton’s alleys are about to become more beautiful! A volunteer team of friends and neighbours will participate in an organized alley cleanupday to create safe and beautiful green spaces in alleys and laneways throughout Hamilton.  The Beautiful Alleys spring cleanup attracted about600 volunteers in over 80 alleys across the city, in neighbourhoods from Dundurn to Parkdale, probably one of the largest groups of volunteersever assembled for this type of cleanup project in a community-led initiative.  Some alleys had up to 30 volunteers clearing a collection ofmaterials that not only looked ugly, but impeded the progress of vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians and created safety and environmental issuesas well. Hundreds of bags of trash were collected, hundreds more bags of yard waste and recyclables were diverted from the landfill and theresults were amazing.  Plans are underway for enhancement projects like urban art installations to make these sometimes forgotten spaces intobeautiful green places for all ages to enjoy.

The fall cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, from 11 am – 3 pm.

Garbage and recycle bags, protective gloves, safety training, light refreshments, and a free pizza lunch at Powell Park are provided during andafter the cleanup. The alley maintenance project is underway, with many of the volunteers returning to their alleys on a regular basis to keep thespaces clean, report illegal dumping, and plan for future enhancements.
