City of Hamilton’s Foreign Investment Strategy Released
The City of Hamilton’s Economic Development Strategy 2010-2015 clearly identified the diversification of the economy as a high priority and the importance of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in achieving this objective. Virtually all of Hamilton’s major municipal competitors have FDI strategies in place and are aggressively pursuing new investments. FDI also tends to comprise a significant amount of manufacturing: a sector that is a high priority for the Provincial and Federal governments and one for which Hamilton is very well suited to compete. Even though Hamilton has benefited from several large plant locations over the last three years, the majority of new investment and location in North America is attributable to foreign investment from off-shore namely Europe, South America and the far east.

Innovation Factory’s Synapse Life
Science Competition in Full Swing
As Hamilton looks to develop its position as a leader in the life sciences, community members have come together to present the second annual Synapse Life Science Competition.
It’s a collaboration between Innovation Factory, TechAlliance, McMaster University and Ontario Centres of Excellence. Synapse is designed to help move innovative life science products and services out of the lab and into market, by pairing up life science innovators with business and entrepreneurship students.
Twelve finalists were selected to participate in this year’s competition, and teams of innovators and students have been formed. They’ve developed their executive summaries and are now tasked with producing a detailed commercialization plan. The scoring of these plans will narrow down the competition to a select few top finalists who will present at a final showcase on April 8, 2015, with winners receiving cash and various in-kind services.
