Press release for Hamilton’s LGBTQ2SIA+ Community Needs Assessment Survey

Hamilton, ON –

Happy Pride month!

The LGBTQ2SIA+ community in Hamilton is changing. In recognition of this, a community-designed online survey is being launched on June 8 2018 to gather input on the experiences and needs of all LGBTQ2SIA+ persons in the Hamilton/Greater Hamilton Area! LGBTQ2SIA+ is an acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Questioning/Queer, 2 Spirited, Intersex, Asexual, Plus other non-hetero orientations or genders.

Help us gather current data on the living experiences of today’s LGBTQ2SIA+ communities within Hamilton. The survey findings will inform advocacy needs, general knowledge and well-being of our diverse communities, and future project planning by public and not-for-profit organizations.

This survey is anonymous and for anyone who identifies with the LGBTQ2SIA+ spectrum, lives, works, or plays in the Hamilton area and is 16 years of age or older. It can be found at hamiltonlgbtneeds.ca/survey. During the months of June and July, we will be offering paper surveys and volunteer support at The Aids Network and the North Hamilton Community Health Centre (NHCHC).

To show our appreciation for participants, each completed survey will receive $5 gift card to Tim Horton’s via e-mail. Participants can also be entered to win an iPad if they refer people to take the survey and at least three people do.

We’ll be at Hamilton Pride events throughout the month of June to promote the survey.

This research is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and community partners: McMaster University, The Aids Network, Gilbrea Centre for Studies in Aging.

Have your say and shape the future!

Background:
In early 2017, a committee formed and approached members and partners of Hamilton’s LGBTQ2SIA+ community for input to develop a comprehensive survey that would assess the needs of LGBTQ2SIA+ persons living in Hamilton. Through the course of developing the survey, over 30 diverse, local LGBTQ+ members and allies were consulted.

This consultation resulted in a survey that aims to provide a comprehensive and detailed picture of the needs of Hamilton’s LGBTQ2SIA+ community. The goals of the survey are to identify the ways in which LGBTQ2SIA+ people in Hamilton use services, including LGBTQ2SIA+-specific services, and what their experiences and needs are.

The findings from the project will:
Help us gather current data on the living experiences of today’s LGBTQ+ communities within Hamilton.
Inform advocacy needs, general knowledge and well-being of our diverse communities, and future project planning by public and not-for-profit organizations.
Provide information that can be used by the AIDS network of Hamilton, other service providers, and by the LGBTQ2SIA+ community

Hamilton is a large city but does not have an active gay social / night life scene. I find this pathetic. Is it because were to close to Toronto? or because nobody is taking pride in investing in their own city?

I am married to my partner,we do not go out clubbing, but not being able to simply go out to an all gay place to be with others of the same is sad.

Frankly, the only option is drag shows… not our cup of tea!
