One of Canada’s top junior soccer players currently training in England received a career boost this week with the announcement that he has been invited to trial with RCD Mallorca, a team playing in Spain’s Segundo (Second) division.
Keani Fairbanks, 18, will fly to Spain from England for a week trial May 25-29. Fairbanks is currently on a soccer scholarship with EDSV Academy at Oaklands College in St. Albans, Hertfordshire.
Fairbanks started playing soccer with Dundas Youth Soccer Club, moving on to Flamborough, and then Toronto Lynx before joining the Hamilton Schalke FC team, playing in the Hamilton District Premier Men’s League as a 16-year-old.
Fairbanks had trials last year with Brentford FC in England and IFK Goteborg in Sweden, and last month trained with the Toronto FC Academy before heading back to England for his final semester.
Said agency owner Lee Fairbanks, “because Keani plays a specifically Spanish style of football. He is a playmaking midfielder who understands the possession and patient approach the Spanish have perfected during their past 10 years as the primary soccer nation in the world.”
“At this level of play career decisions are not made simply on skills and physical ability but are equally about the athlete’s understanding of the specific playing philosophy of the team they are joining.”
