Paraphrased Productions Presents
THE HAMILTON FRINGE NEW PLAY CONTEST WINNER!
Subway Extension to the Mariana Trench
at the 2017 Hamilton Fringe Festival
July 8th/2017, Hamilton Ontario: Five years in development and winner of the Hamilton Fringe New Play Contest, Paraphrased Productions proudly presents Subway Extension to the Mariana Trench at the Hamilton Fringe Festival. In Subway Extension to the Mariana Trench a man shoots himself on a busy subway car in Toronto and no one claims to have seen it happen. As police investigate, the play explores the connection of four characters to the event, what brought them there, and how the moment changes them. Mysterious, Intense, touching, at times funny, and ultimately deeply revealing, Subway Extension to the Mariana Trench uses a unique blend of spoken word poetry and theatre to tell a story of human frailty and strength. Reviewers praise playwright Andrew Lee’s “crackling dialogue” (View Magazine), noting he “deserves generous praise [and] showcases a unique voice, an ingenious knack for intuitive storytelling” (Mooney on Theatre).
Subway Extension to the Mariana Trench began its life as an entry in the Toronto Fringe 24-hour play contest. Given four elements: The deepest trench in the ocean, a lemur ball, zeitgeist, and the line “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush” it was written in less than 24 hours and won 1st prize. Over time it was combined with another play called The Seventh Time You Leave and with a little work became what you see today. The play overall has been five years on the contest circuit winning awards before finally coming to stage at the Hamilton Fringe Festival. It plays at the Players Guild of Hamilton July 21st-30th.
Paraphrased Productions is a Hamilton company that features a combination of theatre veterans and new comers, telling stories of memory, trauma, and the journey to find the kernel of truth at the centre of every story. No strangers to Fringe festivals, this will be the fifth production in a Fringe Festival for Paraphrased Productions.
Subway Extension to the Mariana Trench at the Hamilton Fringe is written by Andrew Lee, produced by Katrine Raymond, directed by Cassidy Sadler, and stage-managed by Sophie Munden. The cast features: Arun Varma, Claire Renaud, Ed Heeley, Lindsay Wu, and Isaac Lloyd.
