An epic fighting game drenched in DC Comics lore, Injustice: Gods Among Us is a must-buy for casual and hardcore gamers alike.

The Lowdown

Injustice: Gods Among Us is a 2D brawler, brought you by the talented folks at NetherRealm Studios – the creators of the Mortal Kombat series. With a cast of playable characters from all over the DC Comics universe, this game let’s you live out a variety of incredible fantasy battles. Superman would absolutely crush Batman, right?

Well recognizable characters is a start, but a fighting game is all about the mechanics. Timing, combos, moves, power up meters and character match-ups. All of which are incredibly well balanced. I witnessed new-comers pick up and play going toe-to-toe with hardcore fighting gamers. The Mortal Kombat DNA is all over Injustice; rather than being a simple skin-on to 2011’s Mortal Kombat, NetherRealm has beefed up the fighting engine. A move that suits the superheroes you battle as. The inclusion of an “EX” type power meter, which builds up through a fight, allows players to “power-up” super moves and execute devastating ultra moves which send you traversing through environments.

Speaking of which, the maps are large and interactive i.e. littered with destructible objects. Most 2D brawlers feel small and restricted, Injustice however makes you feel like you are in an arena. Superheroes can traverse through multiple levels in each stage and leave a trail of entertaining destruction behind. Full points, NetherRealm.

Playstation and XBOX both are beginning to show their age, that said this is still one of the best looking fighting games around. It’s realistic art style does make the overall image feel slightly less crisp than say, Street Fighter. It counterbalances that by looking and feeling much more brutal than those games, an effective sacrifice.

Audio & Video

The soundtrack of the game delivers big-time, each blow and combo lands with satisfying thumps. The game truly excels with it’s cut scenes and art style, a very polished effort. All the DC Comics Characters are incredibly detailed, albeit in a slightly different look than you may be used to seeing. The studio has taken a liberal art direction, adjusting the look of characters to suit the brutal all-out war kind of world they are in. Batman, Flash, Catwoman and others exhibit a cool armour-type suit over their traditional tights. The large interactive maps feel alive, with lots of moving pieces in the background. The destruction and cut scenes are a treat to watch.

This is what essentially sets Injustice a tier above most other brawlers, the pick up and play style makes this an awesome party game over most others. The fact that the roster of characters is filled with household names like Superman, Batman and the Joker adds another layer of appeal – making it the kind of game that is worth buying and keeping in your games library. It’s a blast to play, and an equally entertaining to watch. The cast of heroes is already expanding with at least 4 new playable characters coming via downloadable content.

Brutal, entertaining and ultimately satisfying action game that let’s you pit household superheroes in battle against each other. There’s constant pick-up and play appeal here, allowing new comers to join the fight at any time. A must-buy party game.
