If you believe that lightning doesn’t strike twice there are some excellent opportunities for a more adventurous traveler to discover or re-discover Europe this summer and fall. There is no question the recent events in Brussels, Paris and Nice have dampened the current tourist season with the result that there are more vacation bargains available. EasyJet—one of the largest low cost European airlines has cut its already low fares by 20 percent. Taking for example Nice the capital of the French Riviera, a flight from London’s Gatwick Airport to Nice can go for as low as $75 Canadian.
While the Riviera is synonymous with conspicuous wealth there are numerous reasonably-priced hotel options available for under $200 a night or even lower including breakfast. A hotel like the Best Western Roosevelt is within walking distance of the beach and other central Nice attractions offers small but clean accommodations with breakfast for $160 a night for a September stay. There are numerous fully equipped apartments available for a little more per night.
Nice has many attractions, miles of beaches (mostly pebbled, not sandy) terrific restaurants, galleries and shopping, but it can also be a strategic jumping-off spot for exploring Monaco, Menton, Cannes, Eze—all reachable by inexpensive bus or train.
