The Queen of Neo Soul, Erykah Badu, performed at Kool Haus in Toronto last night. The Grammy-award winning soul singer and songwriter performed an impressive show. She also happened to be celebrating her 42nd birthday with her fans.

DJ A1 set the mood for the evening, spinning classic 90’s and early 2000s booty shaking fan favourites. Ms. Badu was slightly late (as expected) for the sold-out crowd, dressed in her signature beanie toque.

Her band Cannabinoids was the quiet superstar of the night. With the wave of her hand, or the utterance of a single syllable, Badu’s wish was her band’s command. The audience present was rapt with attention as Badu and The Cannabinoids shared their talents.

Rarely does Badu perform an album onstage from start to finish, but for her birthday she gave fans a special treat. Mama’s Gun is regarded by many fans a masterpiece and is certainly a fan favorite. The album put her on the map, and Tuesday night was a rare treat to hear her sing the album in full. Along with tracks from Baduizm.

To say that her Toronto concert was a success is putting it mildly. It was a downright jam – the “damn jam.” Her fans, who waited patiently all night to hear her sweet, powerful voice, were greatly rewarded and their thirst for their goddess was quenched. Only Badu can pull off a concert on her birthday with such finesse and grace.
