Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre Foundation have finished their $5.1 million fundraising drive to build and equip the CIBC Breast Assessment Centre and construction has begun, with completion scheduled for spring 2014. Once open, the Centre will provide rapid access to breast cancer screening and diagnostic services to women of all ages and will be the most comprehensive assessment facility of its type in the region. The Centre will handle more than 10,000 patient visits per year, offering services to women with breast abnormalities detected during screening, women presenting with symptoms, women at high genetic risk for breast cancer, and women previously treated for breast cancer who require ongoing diagnostic follow-up. It will also support men requiring breast cancer assessment (less than 1% of all breast cancer occurs in men). Patients referred to the Centre will be assessed by experts in surgery, radiology and pathology all in one day, operating out of one centre and acting as one team. All tests necessary to accurately diagnose a breast abnormality will be completed in a single visit, with a final diagnosis and, if needed, a treatment plan, available in five days. By eliminating the need for multiple appointments and minimizing the wait for test results, the CIBC Breast Assessment Centre will reduce the anxiety felt by patients and their families.
