Channel Zero, the operator of CHCH TV in Hamilton has formed a partnership with business news giant Bloomberg to bring a Canadian version of Bloomberg TV to Canada. Currently the US version of Bloomberg is available as part of an upper-tier channel package. Under the partnership there will be two Canadian based business segments inserted in each hour during the day plus two hour-long programs airing in prime time. Channel Zero CEO Cal Millar, says the plan has been in the works for a couple of years, but was recently finalized in New York. “We feel pretty good about being picked for this venture”, says Miller. “They liked us because we were independent and because we were entrepreneurial.” Bloomberg CEO Michael Bloomberg became famous for parlaying a severance package he got from a brokerage firm into the technological business reporting giant of today. His patented stock and financial information terminals are in more than 300,000 offices.
The partnership will have some spinoff benefits for CHCH’s news operation. CHCH will be able to access news from Bloomberg’s 6 bureaus in Canada and dozens worldwide employing more than 2400 journalists. In addition the Bloomberg terminal will be installed at the Hamilton TV station. “It will improve our own business coverage,” says Millar. “There is hardly a story today, whether it is entertainment or sports that doesn’t have a business hook as well.” Studios are now being constructed at Brookfield Place in the heart of the Bay Street financial district.
