Canada lost 54,500 jobs in March–the worst in over four years, bringing the unemployment rate up to 7.2%. The jobs lost were nearly all full-time, private sector workers. This more than negates the 50, 700 jobs added in February. In addition to this, trade figures from February show that Canada’s deficit rose to 1.02 billion because of lower exports and higher imports. Analysts had expected Canada to gain jobs, and traders had expected surpluses.
