Every August on the spectacular shores of the Pacific Ocean in Pebble Beach, about 200 of the most prized exotic cars and motorcycles in the world roll onto what is often called the best finishing hole in golf — the famed eighteenth fairway at Pebble Beach. Tire meets turf and transformation occurs: the stage is set for one of the most competitive events in the automotive world. The occasion is the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It is one of the world’s top super car collector shows. It has also served as the inspiration for what has been dubbed the Marques d’Elegance, a worthy Canadian competitor. The Canadian show of exotic cars will be coming to venues in the Bay Area the weekend of August 23 to 25th. Think of Ferrari, Lamborghini Maserati, Aston Martin and Porsche, as well as luxury vehicles from elsewhere in Europe, Asia and North America—there will be between 120 and 150 of them on display at the Canadian Warplane Heritage, Downtown Burlington and at Burlington’s Paletta Mansion.
The show is the brainchild of Felice Cappellano, himself an exotic car owner, who says it all started a couple of years ago when he and some of his fellow luxury car enthusiasts would get together with their cars –they call them ‘moving works of art. Last years event –a one day affair attracted enthusiasts from as far away as Dubai. It raised $17,000 for a local charity and this year the proceeds will support the Carpenter Hospice and Autism Ontario. “A lot of the guys who own these kinds of cars, have obviously done very well and are looking for an opportunity to display their cars and to give something back to the community,” explained Felice. He added that they try to work with charities that don’t get a lot of government support. In keeping with the luxury car theme the events are designed to add a touch of elegance .
At a gala kick-off event on the Friday at the Canadian Warplane Heritage guests will enjoy first class food and wine along with gifts for the ladies and cigars for the men. Similarly the finale on Sunday at Paletta mansion will feature food, Champagne, live music and a fashion show. “We want to make this an event that will attract spouses and girlfriends , not just guys,” Felice added. Not all the events are for those with deep pockets. A car rally taking place Saturday morning along Brant street will allow everybody to get a peek at the cars. A $2 dollar collection will support the charities. He says Ontario, surprisingly, has more luxury cars per capita than anywhere else in North America— even California. Just to give you an idea of how luxurious these cars are, Felice estimates that the total value of the cars that will be on display at this years Marques D’Elegance will be in excess of $50 Million.
